A project by CSIRO to develop a publicly accessible wave energy atlas has led to the addition of another new layer to the Australian Renewable Energy Mapping Infrastructure (AREMI) project.

The innovative wave resource mapping and modelling project aims to allow users to better assess the feasibility of wave power projects off Australian shores.

In announcing $1.3 million in funding for the project in 2014, Australian Renewable Energy Agency CEO Ivor Frischknecht said the project was 'an important step forward in enabling more wave energy projects to come to the fore in Australia'.

Some of the work completed to date is now available online as part of the AREMI project. The data shows that Australia's best wave power resources are generally along the south and west coasts, in particular south-west Western Australia and the west coast of Tasmania.
