Role purpose

  • The Dams Engineer provides a wide range of civil engineering services with civil infrastructure associated with water, hydropower, renewable energy and power, including dams, structures, foundations, and general civil works, delivering practical and commercially sound solutions to a wide range of national and international clients.

    Role accountabilities

  • Strategy Execution (customer, community and stakeholders)
  • Participate in the planning process for individual, strategic and business plans
    Leadership and organisation
  • Liaise with other teams and groups on design and contract matters,
  • Specify and organise procurement of equipment and materials
  • Specify, organise and manage geotechnical investigation programs and administer the technical content of contracts
  • Instruct drafting personnel in design requirements for preparation of drawings, including review of drawings
  • Liaise with other teams and groups on design matters, including environmental, survey, hydrology, mechanical and electrical.
  • Manage own time and priorities to manage personal work load to take corrective actions as required to achieve plans
  • Share knowledge gained with the wider team
  • Look at continuous improvement of the delivery of work.

  • Provide expertise and undertake projects in the field of civil engineering for internal and external clients, including:
  • Develop concept and feasibility studies for existing or new projects, including the supervision of site investigation programs
  • Prepare design layouts, detailed design analysis, design documentation (drawings and specifications) for civil structures, geotechnical solutions, dams and hydropower-related projects
  • Prepare design information and reports for civil services and systems to undertake condition assessments and safety reviews
  • Inspect work in the field for compliance with design requirements, and commission civil works on site.
  • Analyse and investigate the performance of new and existing civil systems, including:
  • Inspect assets, prepare reports outlining the findings and recommend future actions
  • Assess condition, performance and risk in accordance with accepted industry practice and available standards
  • Provide input to broader projects and studies in areas requiring civil engineering judgement and advice

    Candidate attributes-
    Technical Skills and Qualifications
  • Tertiary - postgraduate qualifications in civil engineering
  • Professional knowledge of the various facets of civil engineering related to water and power infrastructure including demonstrated and professional knowledge in a number of the following sub disciplines:
  • Dams, geotechnical engineering and investigations
  • Structural design
  • Site supervision
  • Hydropower engineering, hydraulic engineering and pipeline design.

  • Experience in design project work associated with new or refurbishment projects in the area of dams, hydropower, renewable energy, or heavy industry
  • Demonstrated awareness of engineering codes of practices, standards and guidelines
  • Ability to maintain knowledge and expertise in the relevant field/s and keep abreast of best practice and developments in legislative requirements, undertaking professional development as appropriate
  • Ability to contribute to peer mentoring, and share experience and skills to
    build team knowledge and capability
  • Ability to solve complex technical and operational problems, through either a systematic approach or through innovation
  • A high standard of computing skills utilising Microsoft Office Suite of products, and relevant engineering software

  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills to communicate clearly and collaborate successfully with colleagues, customers, service providers and the community, including the ability to prepare technical and non-technical documentation
  • Ability to build and maintain successful and collaborative internal and external relationships and negotiate effectively (e.g. with clients and service providers) to achieve the goals of the team and the organisation
  • Ability to adapt to and work effectively in multidisciplinary teams in a professional services environment and a variety of changing situations, and to promote team work with colleagues to achieve team cohesion and targets
