The Clean Energy Council Awards are the Australian renewable energy industry's most prestigious awards, recognising the outstanding contribution that individuals and businesses have made to clean energy in Australia.
Nominations for the Clean Energy Council Awards 2022 have officially closed. Finalists will be announced on 17 June 2022, with winners crowned at the Australian Clean Energy Summit Gala Dinner on 19 July 2022. Stay tuned for more details.
Doosan GridTech (Doosan) designed, procured, constructed and commissioned all plant and equipment for Vena Energy’s 100 MW/150 MWh Wandoan South Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), Queensland’s first utility-scale battery. Doosan’s innovative design included enclosing the BESS in a concrete building with a central fire and cooling management system housing to make it more operationally efficient in the harsh Queensland climate. The BESS also uses Doosan’s Intelligent Controller, which is one of the first storage control systems to be built on an artificial intelligence platform.
Neoen developed a virtual battery solution to allow a large electricity user or retailer to mimic a grid-scale battery without having to build or own one. In an Australian first, Neoen’s virtual battery solution was adopted by AGL Energy, which signed a seven-year agreement to receive 70 MW/140 MWh of virtual battery capacity in NSW. The agreement allows AGL to hedge its customer load by virtually charging or discharging the battery, which is ideally suited to managing the increasing challenges of the “duck curve” and evening peaks.
RES’ Solar Asset Management Team developed a simulation tool that creates an exact virtual model of a solar farm down to the string, combiner box and inverter level. Known as a ‘Digital Twin’, the site-specific, weather-based simulation tool allows RES to identify under-performance or monitoring trends at a solar farm. In 2021, the Digital Twin alerted the company to an under-performing inverter at one of the solar farms RES was asset managing. The early discovery of the issue enabled by the Digital Twin resulted in the site being returned to 100 per cent production within a week, reducing the cost of the incident by over 90 per cent.
The Blind Creek Solar Farm (BCSF) project was led by farmers who undertook an extensive community engagement process with their local community. BCSF worked with their local community to pioneer a benefit sharing scheme for solar projects which will share $3.5 million in financial benefits over the lifetime of the project with neighbours and the community. The agri-solar project was also specifically designed to co-exist with sheep grazing, regenerative agriculture, a soil carbon sequestration project and biodiversity restoration.
Global Power Generation Australia (GPGA) developed the Berrybank Community Solar Power Program as part of the Community Engagement and Benefit Sharing Plan associated with the Berrybank 1 Wind Farm.
The initiative installed 26 rooftop solar systems in community facilities and low-income households throughout the region. Beyond the direct positive impact on vulnerable families by reducing electricity bills, the project pursues a demonstrative purpose both for final users of this renewable energy at the domestic level and for local installation companies as a business development opportunity.
Neoen developed the Learning Hub, an online educational resource for primary and secondary schools to help strengthen and promote energy literacy and understanding about clean energy. Developed by an experienced science curriculum writer, the program includes educational resources such as videos, interactive games, worksheets and lesson plans for teachers. After initially being distributed and promoted to over 80 schools in the communities surrounding Neoen’s projects, the Learning Hub is now available as a free resource to schools around Australia.
The winners of the Outstanding Contribution to Industry Award and the Media Award will be announced at the 2022 Australian Clean Energy Summit Gala Dinner. The Outstanding Contribution to Industry Award recognises an individual who has made a major and sustained contribution to the clean energy industry, while the Media Award recognises a journalist who has delivered exceptional coverage of the Australia clean energy industry.
The awards will be presented at the Australian Clean Energy Summit Gala Dinner at the conclusion of Day One of the 2022 Australian Clean Energy Summit.
