Norway's Hydrobalance program highlighted opportunities to use Norwegian hydropower as a source of energy storage, and demonstrated the value of hydrobalancing to facilitate a greater penetration of renewable energy sources in both Norwegian and neighbouring energy systems.

Since the conclusion of the Hydrobalance program in 2018, Dr Harby has been engaged to undertake work with IEA Hydro to identify the optimal role and value of hydropower in transitioning energy markets.
