Clean Energy Council welcomes AEMO's Renewable Integration Study

The Clean Energy Council welcomes the Renewable Integration Study (RIS), released today by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), which evaluates the technical challenges associated with a reliance on high levels of renewable energy resources.

The study highlights that Australia can reach 75 per cent instantaneous penetration of wind and solar in the next five years, which Clean Energy Council Chief Executive, Kane Thornton said is “exciting news” for the industry and consumers alike.

“This would mean that 10 GW of renewables can be added in a relatively short amount of time, and as a world leader in renewable energy transition, we should be taking every step necessary to get there.”

The study sets out actions to adapt Australia’s market and regulatory arrangements to ensure we can reap the full benefits of more renewable energy.

Mr Thornton said the industry is committed to ensuring the highest levels of system security in the National Electricity Market (NEM) are maintained as we move to higher levels of renewables penetration in the electricity grid.

“The significant advantages of renewable energy both from an environmental and socioeconomic standpoint have been known for some time now. AEMO’s Draft 2020 Integrated System Plan demonstrates that the least cost future system is one dominated by renewables. This report provides actions on how we can make a high renewables electricity system a technical reality.

“We should be preparing the system for this transformation through flexible market and regulatory frameworks that can adapt swiftly and effectively as the power system evolves. The clean energy industry is looking forward to working with AEMO and other market bodies on changes to market and regulatory arrangements to deliver high levels of system reliability and security through the significant energy transformation underway.”
