Launch of Business Renewables Centre to accelerate opportunity for corporate Australia

The Clean Energy Council has welcomed the launch of the Business Renewables Centre to further accelerate the booming market for Australian companies procuring their own renewable energy supply, the Clean Energy Council said.

Clean Energy Council Chief Executive Kane Thornton said the corporate power purchasing agreement (PPA) market is growing rapidly both in Australia and overseas and provides a massive opportunity for businesses and renewable energy developers to work together to bring down costs and move to a cleaner energy system.

The Clean Energy Council has signed on as a founding member of the nation’s first Business Renewables Centre, an information hub and membership platform that aims to simplify, streamline and accelerate corporate purchasing of large-scale wind and solar energy and storage.

“There is a growing demand for businesses seeking to procure more renewable energy to offset rising energy costs and provide price security through fixed pricing,” Mr Thornton said.

“Interest from businesses in purchasing renewable energy is rising, but as some of the early adopters of Power Purchase Agreement have found, it can be a complex and time-consuming process,” Mr Thornton said. “As a founding partner, we will work with the Business Renewables Centre to untap the true potential of this market, bringing our members’ experience to the table and helping to bridge the gap between renewable energy developers and corporate customers."

The Business Renewables Centre has set an ambitious goal to deliver 1 GW of new renewable energy in Australia by 2022 and 5 GW by 2030.

“These purchasing agreements not only protect businesses from rising power prices but, also support continued development of the renewable energy industry in the absence of a long-term term federal energy policy,” he said.

The Business Renewables Centre is supported by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and the Victorian and NSW Governments and is delivered through WWF, ISF and Climate-KIC.
