NSW climate leadership unlocks economic opportunity

The New South Wales Government has recognised the enormous opportunity that switching to a low-carbon economy brings following today's transformative announcement of a 50 per cent cut to emissions by 2030.

"The Net Zero Plan: Stage 1 Implementation Update provides another strong indication of NSW's ambition and will strengthen the confidence of renewable energy investors, in turn helping the state to reap strong clean energy investment and jobs over the next decade," said Clean Energy Council Chief Executive, Kane Thornton.

"This interim target is the crucial first step in responding to climate change and unlocking the associated economic opportunity. NSW has a solid plan to deliver emissions reduction with a clear energy policy and focus on renewable energy zones, recognising that firmed renewable generation is now the most cost-competitive way to generate power, reduce electricity bills and deliver jobs into regional NSW.

"A strong target with a clear plan is critical to ensuring a clear signal to investors and enabling practical measures – such as investment in electricity transmission and reform to planning frameworks – that remove barriers to investment. NSW's leadership today is a clear signal to the Federal Government that our nation's response to climate change is an opportunity to unite all of Australia and unlock the enormous economic opportunity within our grasp."
