NSW renewable energy budget booster keeps state on track for superpower status

The Clean Energy Council says that today's pre-budget funding announcement of $380 million for the implementation of the New South Wales Energy Infrastructure Roadmap indicates that the state is maintaining the momentum to transition to clean energy by the end of the decade.

State Treasurer Dominic Perrottet has said that $380 million will be spent over the next four years to ensure that transmission upgrades in the Central West-Orana renewable energy zone are shovel-ready by the end of 2022 and set up the roadmap, including the Consumer Trustee, Financial Trustee and Regulator to protect consumers and drive competition.

Clean Energy Council Chief Executive Kane Thornton said that the roadmap is a transformative project, and this additional funding can be a catalyst for investor confidence.

"NSW has legislated ambitious plans to completely transform its electricity sector in the coming nine years, with a comprehensive plan to strengthen and expand its transmission backbone and attract clean energy generation and storage capacity," he said.

"Delivering strategic transmission upgrades will be critical to attracting private investment within the renewable energy zones.

"We're pleased to see this scale of ambition will be matched with significant funds in this year's budget to establish the necessary governance bodies, undertake the strategic planning, lay the foundations for the future transition build and begin to contract with the private sector.

"We look forward to working with the NSW Government on the detailed design and implementation of the roadmap."
