VRET2 puts Victoria on the path to a clean recovery

The announcement of a second round of tenders for large-scale renewable energy projects in Victoria will be a shot in the arm for the clean energy industry and help regional parts of the state make a clean economic recovery over the coming three years.

Today, the Victorian Government has announced a second Victorian Renewable Energy Target reverse auction (VRET2), with the aim of bringing forward at least a further 600 MW of new renewable energy capacity in Victoria by 31 December 2024.

Clean Energy Council Chief Executive Kane Thornton said that with a marked slowdown in financial commitments for new utility-scale renewable energy generation over the past two years across the National Electricity Market, including Victoria, the new tender round will be a fillip for industry.

“The tender will stimulate a new wave of economic activity in regional Victoria, delivering thousands of new jobs in construction and opportunities for local supply chains.

“It will also put Victoria in a very strong position to meet and beat its 40 per cent renewable energy target by 2025.”

The Victorian Government continues to emphasise proponents sharing the benefits of new projects with their host communities, and we expect to see best practice community benefit sharing programs delivering a positive lasting impact in regional Victoria.
