The Clean Energy Council does not support the use of native forest wood waste to generate energy unless it can be verified as coming from sustainably managed forests. An appropriately rigorous and broadly agreed-upon standard for ensuring the methods and locations of timber harvesting are environmentally sustainable is essential for native forest wood waste to be counted as a renewable energy source.

Given that at present there is no clear or agreed process for assessing the sustainability of native forest wood waste, the Clean Energy Council does not currently support it being included under the Renewable Energy Target.
