Letter to the AFR – Clean Energy Council does not endorse National Energy Guarantee

The Clean Energy Council does not endorse the Federal Government’s proposed National Energy Guarantee as was reported this week (“Labor states leave door open to NEG”, October 25).

We remain surprised and disappointed that the Federal Government decided to walk away from the Clean Energy Target, a policy which had attracted support from a broad coalition of stakeholders including business, consumer groups, social services and the entire energy sector.

The renewable energy industry believes the new policy poses a lot of questions and has potential for unintended consequences that could negatively affect investment and jobs in our industry. We are however open minded about its potential and keen to look at more detail as it becomes available.

Bipartisan agreement on long-term energy policy remains critical and urgent.

Kane Thornton
Chief Executive
Clean Energy Council
